People have been asking me about my new found fascination for hamsters. Keeping in mind i am a foodie, i must point out here both the interests are mutually exclusive :). My kids had been bothering me to get a pet dog, and i love animals so i really wanted to but my kids are too young right now. I used to take them to local pet shops so they could interact with the animals there and thats where i noticed the hamsters. The geek that i am, i started to read about hamsters online and the more i read the more i was understanding that they make such good pets. They are among the most trouble free animals and if treated right, can be wonderful pets. So for my son’s birthday we decided to get him a hamster as a surprise, the only problem was there weren’t any young hamsters around. Being one of the most prolific breeders in the animal kingdom i think the hamsters in Delhi missed that memo. No one seemed to have any babies and obviously they couldn’t tell me when they might have them. So i did the next best thing and got my son an adult hamster who we now call Jerry.
Jerry is an adult dwarf hamster, yes he is fully grown. Dont say that to him though, he doesn’t like people making fun of his size. So, we got Jerry and found out he must have some childhood. He is a VERY angry hamster, i mean seriously, he seeks out your hands and then ……. chomp ! Obviously we dont socialize with him anymore, only watch him running around in his cage. The intention to get a playful pet for my kids remained and this time i actually made a booking for a baby hamster. About ten days back we got him and he is Tom (no points for guessing Tom and Jerry is my kids favorite cartoon, and mine too). This little guy is bite sized and just so cute you have to resist the urge to eat him up (all the animal welfare nazis out there, this is only figurative) .
Yes he looks so tiny, he was even smaller when we got him but i didnt want scare him with the camera so this is a few days after that. He is already almost as big as Jerry and since he is a Syrian hamster he will be much bigger.
So this is the introduction to the 2 little guys, more will follow.
where can i get a pet hamster in delhi?

Lots of places. Khan market and Defence Colony market to name a few. The pet shop in Defence Colony market (cant remember the name) is at the back side near Arabian Nites. They also breed hamsters, so they are the best bet for a baby.
